Calligaris ceramic tops are made from porcelain stoneware: clay and select raw materials that are mixed, tinted through the body, compacted under high pressure and fired at 1200°C. The result captures the veining and depth of natural marble, travertine and stone, with none of their vulnerabilities. Porcelain is non-porous, so it doesn't absorb liquids, and it stands up remarkably well to scratches, impacts, stains, chemicals and sudden changes in temperature. It's also hygienic and easy to clean.

That is the key difference from real marble. Natural stones like Italy's Paonazzo marble are prized for their dramatic veining but need regular sealing and careful cleaning to avoid stains and etching from wine, citrus and vinegar. A ceramic top gives you the same visual drama with the practicality of a kitchen-grade surface.

How it's built. Most Calligaris dining tops are ceramic-glass: a ceramic plate bonded to a sheet of glass in an autoclave, creating a single self-supporting panel. The matte finishes pair a 3mm ceramic plate with 8mm glass for an 11mm top. The glossy marbles and Touchstone use a thicker 6mm ceramic plate paired with 6mm glass for a 12mm top, or with 12mm glass for an 18mm top, depending on the model. Some designs instead bond ceramic to a wood-particle panel, known as ceramic-wood.

Glossy Marble Looks

Polished to a soft shine that brings out the depth of the veining, these are the most luxurious-looking finishes in the collection.

P2C White Marble is the classic: a bright white ground with bold grey veining, and the most widely available ceramic across Calligaris tables. P35C Calacatta Paonazzo Matte shares the same veining as P31C with a soft, honed finish, which makes the pair the clearest way to see the difference between glossy and matte. P18C Calacatta Black is dramatic and moody, with white and gold veins crackling across near-black stone. P14C Bronze is a warm, earthy brown with faint veining that pairs beautifully with bronze and walnut bases. P32C White Travertino reproduces the fine horizontal bands of travertine in a creamy white. Glass: Clear, Tinted and Textured

Glass keeps a table visually light, letting the base become the star and making a small dining area feel more open. Calligaris offers glass in two moods.

Textured glass is where Calligaris gets artistic. Solid Wood: Wild Oak

Calligaris's solid wood tops are built by joining several boards cut directly from the trunk, and each board is selected for its natural grain, knots and splits. Nothing is hidden or evened out, so every table is genuinely unique, with the kind of character that only improves as it ages.

The Wild collection comes in three tones: P2GW Wild Natural, a warm honey oak; P2HW Wild Grey, a weathered driftwood grey with pronounced knots; and P2JW Wild Carbon, a deep charcoal black that lets the grain show through. Veneer tops are made from thin sheets of wood sliced from the highest-quality logs, bonded to a stable core and then finished. Veneer isn't a shortcut. It lets Calligaris use the most beautiful parts of the tree across a whole tabletop and arrange the grain in patterns that solid boards can't achieve, all while resisting the seasonal movement of solid wood.

The two veneer tops you'll see most are P1GW Canaletto Walnut, a rich, chocolate-brown American walnut with flowing grain, and P67W Termocotto, a heat-treated oak laid in a herringbone pattern that evokes a classic parquet floor. Find them on the rounded-corner wood versions of the Cameo, Cartesio, Sunshine, Icaro and Abrey tables. P3DW Light Walnut, P12 Smoke and P15L Matt Black appear mainly on wood bases, making it easy to coordinate a base with your top, chairs and cabinetry.

For busy families and frequent entertaining: any ceramic. It's the most forgiving surface Calligaris makes. Matte finishes like P35C, P32C and P14C also hide fingerprints and crumbs better than gloss.

For a showpiece marble look: glossy P31C Calacatta Paonazzo or P2C White Marble, or P4C Golden Onyx if you want the table to be the boldest thing in the room.
